Specialty Codes 54, 87, 88, and 99
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided the following guidance regarding the use of specialty codes 54, 87, 88, and 99.
Use of Specialty Code 87 will now be restricted to pharmacies only. The Provider Enrollment, Chain, and Ownership System (PECOS) maintenance team is currently transitioning pharmacies with a specialty code A5 to specialty code 87.
Individual suppliers, other than pharmacies, that currently utilize specialty code 87 will be transferred to specialty code 99 representing an "unknown physician." Individual suppliers currently enrolled with a specialty code 54 will also be transferred to specialty code 99.
Organizational entities, other than pharmacies currently utilizing specialty code 87 will be transferred to specialty code 88 representing an "unknown supplier or provider." Organizational entities currently enrolled with a specialty code 54 will also be transferred to specialty code 88.
