Maternity Care
Maternity care services are covered benefits under Medicare Part B for Medicare eligible patients. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes 59400 through 59430 describe maternity services for patients who have a vaginal delivery. CPT codes 59510 through 59515 describe maternity services for patients having a cesarean delivery. When submitting claims for maternity care to Medicare Part B, providers should consider the available codes listed in the CPT and submit a claim for the code that best describes the total service they provided for the beneficiary. Medicare coverage for the mother can include the care provided during the preganacy, the delivery of the child, and the mothers post partum care. However, Medicare Part B does not cover any services provided for the baby following the delivery.
Medicare maternity benefits are addressed in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Internet Only Manual (IOM) 100-2, Chapter 15, Section 20.1.
