1. How can I obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI)?
  The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) provides NPI numbers on-line at:
https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do or by calling 1-800-465-3203.

2. Am I required to obtain a National Provider Identifier?
  Yes, May 23, 2007 - Forward: CMS systems will only accept NPI number. (Exception: Small health plans have an additional year to become NPI compliant)

CMS has granted a non-penalty contingency plan allowing providers to continue to use their PTANs until May 23, 2008. In the non-penalty phase CMS did not require an NPI to be submitted on Medicare claims until March 1, 2008.

3. Do I need to share my National Provider Identifier (NPI) with other providers?
  The answer is, yes, you are required under the law to share your NPI with other providers who need the number for billing purposes.

4. May I have the phone number and/or Website for the NPI Enumerator? I was not aware that we needed a corporation NPI as well as an individual NPI.
