Geographic Reclassification: Process & Effective Dates for Approved Applications
CMS notifies the Fiscal Intermediaries to issue geographic reclassification form letters to all PPS hospitals. These letters inform providers that the applications are available, when they are due and who to contact with questions. WPS typically issues these form letters in early August with the applications being due around September 1st. Refer to the
Approved geographic reclassifications will be published in the late July/Early August Federal Register. FIs will review this listing to ensure Pricing Screens are set up correctly so providers will receive proper payment. FIs will compare the current and prior year listings and change any providers who did not receive approval back to their original standardized amount and/or wage index.
Reclassifications granted by the Board for the Standardized Amount will be effective for the subsequent FFY from the approved date (example: for an approval made October 1, 2003, the effective date will be October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2005).
Note: The provider must submit an application each year to continue its reclassification status. It is not a one-time request and approved thereafter. It must be requested and approved every year.
Reclassifications granted by the Board for the Wage Index will be effective for a 3-year period, starting the subsequent FFY from the approved date (example: for an approval made October 1, 2003, the effective date will be October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2007).
Note: Providers are encouraged to monitor this 3-year period. As the provider nears the last year of the 3-year period, the provider will need to submit an application to continue its reclassification status.
