HPSA Overview

The Physician Scarcity Areas (PSA) program is valid for services rendered on or after January 1, 2005, through June 30, 2008. The Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) program is still in effect.

Please keep in mind that WPS Medicare does not designate shortage areas.
HPSA designations do change occasionally. The Shortage Designation Branch in the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, National Center for Health Workforce Analysis develops shortage designation criteria and uses them to decide whether or not a geographic area is a HPSA. You can visit HRSA Website to determine the criteria used in HPSA designations and for information on contacting their office. Please remember that only a geographic HPSA is eligible for the incentive payment from Medicare.
